[trentn], Hauptstadt des Bundesstaates New Jersey, USA, am linken Ufer des ab Trenton schiffbaren Delaware River, (1994) 84 400 Einwohner, fast 50 % Schwarze (1960: 114 200 Einwohner); katholischer und anglikanischer Bischofssitz; Trenton State College, Staatsbibliothek, Museen; Gummi-, Kunststoff-, Metallwaren- und Textilindustrie; Hafen.
 
 
Um 1630 niederländischer Handelsposten, ab 1679 permanent von Weißen besiedelt. Mit dem Landerwerb (1714) und Ausbau der Siedlung durch William Trent (* 1715, ✝ 1787), einen Kaufmann aus Philadelphia (Pa.), entwickelte sich der Ort, ab 1721 bekannt als Trent's Town, zu einem wichtigen Handelsstützpunkt zwischen Philadelphia und New York. 1784 und 1799 war Trenton zeitweilig Sitz der Bundesregierung, seit 1790 Hauptstadt des Staates New Jersey.
 
Im Unabhängigkeitskrieg errang G. Washington in den Schlachten von Trenton und Princeton (Dezember 1776/Januar 1777) für die Kontinentalarmee wichtige Siege.
